North Toronto

North Toronto

North Toronto boasts a great selection of public, private, and independent schools, several community centres and libraries. Its street life comes alive by the many parkettes and playgrounds, numerous fine restaurants and cafes, excellent shopping opportunities, an abundance of nightlife and perfect accessibility from the city centre. The result is an ideal pace to live, work and play. The area commonly known as “Yonge and Eglinton” is a popular place among yung hip professionals with a huge selection of major retailers, movie theatres, restaurants and night clubs. The North Toronto Community Centre offers a gymnasium, squash courts, a walking track, swimming pool with water slides and a massive outdoor playground for soccer and baseball. Fun for the whole family.

One of the prettiest parts of the area is Blythwood Road. Because of its lovely Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian houses, it was designated by the City of Toronto as a Heritage Conservation District. Some examples of Arts and Crafts architecture can be found here as well.

Location

North Toronto
North Toronto
A hub of activity, the North Toronto neighbourhood is bordered by Eglinton Avenue to the south, Blythwood Road to the north, Bayview Avenue to the east, and Avenue Road to the west. This neighbourhood is large and varied and offers many housing styles form large mansions to starter homes for young familie, condiminium buildings and townhouses. Much of the original housing stock built between 1910 and 1940 has been renovated more than once, and many of the original 1940s bungalows have been demolished to make way for new, multistoried townhouses.

History

In 1890, the three separate villages of Davisville, Eglinton, and Bedford Park joined together to create the Village of North Toronto, which became the “Town of North Toronto” a few months later. The new community, with a population of around 1,000, quickly evolved from farmers’ fields into a desirable commuter suburb located around Yonge Street, Montgomery Avenue, and Bedford Park Avenue.

Right after the Metropolitan Street Railway established North Toronto as the very last stop of its streetcar line from downtown Toronto, the construction of houses began in the area . However, the level of municipal services was so low that the frustrated residents of North Toronto voted to become part of the City of Toronto on December 15, 1912. Since that time, the neighbourhood has expanded and developed into one of the most beloved areas of the city. The streetcar is now replaced by a subway line, and the last stop is no longer Glengrove, but Finch. What was once a suburb has become an established neighbourhood, extremely popular among Torontonians for its location and architecture and the environmental beauty that surrounds the community.

The only active Catholic cemetery within the city is located at 305 Erskine Avenue. By the end of the 20th century, 76,000 people had been buried here. To date, the cemetery is said to be full, but the city plans to close several roads and use the space for future graves and a new columbarium for cremated remains.
