We are thrilled to introduce an exciting furniture store, Vintage Home Boutique, opening soon at 710 St Clair Avenue West in Hillcrest Village. Vintage Home Boutique is a retailer of quality, locally sourced furniture and accessories also offering an eco-friendly option for your furniture refinishing needs. It combines various furniture styles and woods resulting in a stunning, functional yet extremely comfortable home.

The owners of Vintage Home Boutique, Keith and Maureen, hope to offer the elegance of a reclaimed estate through their vintage furniture offering combining Mid Century Modern, Art Deco, French Canadian primitives and Antiques. To better meet their client’s stylish needs they will also offer custom made sofas and chairs along with live edge and reclaimed tables. Vintage Home Boutique is owned by two Hillcrest Village residents who have been living in our community for the past 8 years. We spoke to the owners about their exciting new venture:

Working with your spouse can be a challenging and rewarding experience all at the same time. But with the ever-growing disinterest in the corporate world and realizing how far I’d come from that small rural farming community I loved, and how my creative side had become stifled, it became blatantly evident that my career had to change and it was worth the risks we may encounter. What better way to embark on a new adventure than to pair my skills with that of my husband, Keith? Despite the risks of opening your own vintage furniture store and all of the what-if’s, despite the fact that we’re both still juggling a full-time career while trying to get our business off the ground, despite being parents of an energetic 4 year old and a new baby, it has been an exciting and energizing time. When trying to figure out how we’d be unique from all of the vintage furniture stores that dominate Queen Street, we started with what we were passionate about: Quality, Eco friendly and Local.

We love how our neighbourhood has grown and we love our friendly community. We knew that supporting our local economy and our local artists would be key to keeping the passion for our business alive. So, we decided St. Clair West is the place for our business to satisfy a niche that is currently not available in our area. We hope our business continues to revitalize our community.

Growing up on a farm, environmental sustainability is never far from my mind and an essential part of who I am. By purchasing pieces that may very well end up in landfills, repurposing and finding a new home for unique furniture that just doesn’t exist anymore is one way that I feel I can contribute in a positive way to a world where waste is unfortunately only growing. My recent pregnancy and wanting desperately to start refinishing furniture again, spawned Keith’s search for eco-friendly, low VOC refinishing and painting products. Mission accomplished.

We want to emphasize quality in the products and services we offer. The current vintage stores that exist have their benefits. We want to bring it all together and offer a wider variety of products and services to meet every client’s unique needs. We hope very much to be able to meet and exceed your expectations.

I’ve always had this nagging desire to own my own store. Maybe I’m crazy, maybe it’s genetic. My grandparents owned several businesses simultaneously before immigrating to Canada: bakeries, general stores, mines. Even when I graduated from university and started working as a Product Manager at Club Monaco, I loved the store. Helping customers solve problems was something I loved to do. I would re-merchandise the store on breaks or come in early for a shift so I could walk the building, take notes and make things better for our customers. I loved showing people different looks and helping them find the perfect item. Quickly my career took off at Guess, Hbc, Lowe’s and Stores & Districts. All incredible companies where I learned a lot and progressed but, for me, it lacked energy and passion.

Hence the creation of Vintage Home Boutique. We are probably crazy embarking on this journey right now, when we both have great stable jobs, a “high energy” 4 year old and a new baby but we see a big gap in the market. A place that seamlessly blends vintage and custom made products where everything is unique, one of a kind and has timeless lines and quality. A place that also refinishes furniture in an eco-friendly way. A place that is warm and friendly where you can bring your kids and let them run around. A place that tries to get to know your personal preference and style and will stay in touch. A place that values the local community by showcasing Toronto based artists and local manufacturers.

The Josie Stern Team is excited about building a partnership with Vintage Home Boutique and we hope you are too. The grand opening will be at the end of September and we welcome you to explore this wonderful space and support our local community. You might just find a great item to add to your home!
