Moving

Before scheduling the moving company make sure you find out, from your solicitor, the exact time you will be getting the keys to the house you are moving to. If the keys will be in your possession by 4 pm and the movers will take about 4 hours to pack up your old house then schedule them to come at 11 am. If they come earlier, and you still don’t have the keys to get into your new home, you will be paying the movers per hour to hang around waiting while doing nothing.

Another important reminder is not to cancel your home insurance until after your solicitor confirms title has officially been registered to the new owner of your house. I read a story about a couple who cancelled their home insurance the morning of the move. Mid day, before the property closed, they decided to do laundry on the third floor. The washing machine backed up causing $30,000 water damage to three levels. Guess what? No insurance no coverage.

Here are some more tips to make sure your move goes smoothly:

  • Choose a professional and reputable company for moving and ask them what kind of services they offer. Some companies charge a premium for moving you on legal holidays, weekends, and in the summer months, the very end or beginning of the month when people like to start a new lease, and the exact middle of the month. Look for dates around the 7th or 21st of any given month.
  • Inform gardening, newspapers, magazines and any other home services that you’re moving.
  • Change your address with banks, utility companies, doctors, and the many other institutions that rely on your mailing address to contact you.
  • Get rid of items that you don’t want to take with you. Use kijiji, craigslist, facebook, newspaper ads, garage sales and give items away to charity. If the item is large enough you may be able to get a tax deduction for its value when donating it to charity.
  • Make arrangements for your pets and children on the moving day. You will be able to accomplish much more if they are looked after and kept busy.
  • Register your children with their new schools, if you’re moving out of your current school district.
  • Make sure you collect and store important documents in a safe place, like your birth certificates, stock certificates, wills and passports etc. Keep these documents in your possession to make sure they are safe.
  • Make sure that your utilities are enabled at your new place. This includes telephone, gas, hydro and cable TV.
  • Change subscriptions to magazines and newspapers so they are delivered to your new address.
  • When packing, mark all boxes that contain fragile items, and also put instructions on the boxes outlining which room the contents belong in.
  • Keep a box with essentials, such as toothbrushes, bathroom tissue, medications, soap, easily accessible for your first night in your new home.
